Virgin Mary (Mária) musical

Virgin Mary (Mária) looking for a night’s lodging, Saint Joseph protecting her, Archangel Gabriel the herald of good news, Saint Elisabeth, the kinswoman of Mary and the first admirer of the heavenly Mother, poisoning with disbelief Tempter, Herod the prosecuter of the children, a heartless blacksmith – they are all well-known characters in well-known situations from the Bible, or rather respectively derived from the Bible and the endless interpretations from music, poetry through visual arts. In the musical piece by Tamás Szarka (the singer of the world famous Ghymes ensemble) that is full of creative force and poetic images, the innocent character of Virgin Mary finds herself surrounded by the herodian madness of our days, and She timidly whispers: „Oh, star’s radiating light, tell me, where am I!”

Attila Vidnyánszky, the stage director of the world premiere is convinced that in the contemporary infertile world the problem of birth is not handled properly. According to him every new-born child carries in himself the possibility of redemption. In his interpretation Tamás Szarka’s work reasserts the primary sacred sense of birth – childbirth. The actors of the Csokonai Theatre in Debrecen obtain extraodinary endowment for vocal and scenic expression of the Ghymes ensemble’s music. Ghymes actively promotes Hungarian folk traditions enriched by East-European and Balkan motives in unique way.
