The Merchant of Venice

In this tragic comedy by Shakespeare, Bassanio, a failed Venice merchant, is hopelessly in love with Portia, a beautiful wealthy woman who lives far away, in Belmont. His friend, Antonio, pities him and borrows money so that he can afford to visit her and win her love. However, Antonio's loan has a peculiar and gruesome condition. He borrowed the money from Shylock, a Jewish merchant whom he had taken every opportunity to sabotage and belittle because of his religion.

Shylock, seeking revenge, loans Antonio the money provided that if he does not pay it back in time, he must forfeit one pound of his flesh. Unfortunately for Antonio, he does not take the condition seriously . . .
