The Masquerade by Rimas Tuminas, one of the most outstanding
Lithuanian directors, could be put into the list of the most successful
interpretations of the romantic play by Mikhail Lermontov. In this performance
of the magic beauty, filled in with sounds of heady and nostalgic waltz by Aram
Chatchaturyan and falling snow in the black empty space, you can find not only
experience of our time, but also the cultural heritage of the past century: the
theatre by Brecht and Strehler, films by Fellini and the spree of Broadway.
There Rimas Tuminas revealed his very particular sensation of Romanticism in The Masquerade which is connected with commedia dell‘arte. The elements of this
genre turn the alluring view into a queer tragicomedy. The Independent noticed that Rimas Tuminas‘conception unfolds the
bitter tragedy of the play which reminds of both Othello and Winter‘s Tale
developing in the wild and turbulent world of snow, waltz and elegant clownery.
The magic of Lithuanian Masquerade
comes not from the charm of the masked ball. Acting, direction, scenography
give the feast lasting only several moments and permanent longing for it.
The Masquerade of State Small Theatre of Vilnius has traveled all over the world – from Sweden to Italy, from South Korea to Mexico – and received a number of prestigious awards.
