Szigligeti Ede

Liliomfi comedy

Ede Szigligeti’s Liliomfi is one of the most frequently performed dramas of 19th-century Hungarian literature. The playful, tempestuous tale revolves around the complications of love. The events can only delay the contentment of the young characters, not prevent it. Attila Vidnyánszky’s productions are always expressive of the present. Liliomfi’s story is a parable as well, however exaggerated this claim may seem in the case of a comedy. It is a parable about how one can and must make theatre even under the most destitute conditions, as indeed the theatre company from Beregszász (Berehovo in western Ukraine),  has now been doing for some twenty years.
