Duchess of Malfi

John Webster (circa 1580 – 1634) was an English playwright and a late contemporary of Shakespeare’s. His first drama premiered at the Blackfriars Theatre in 1614. The duchess, not long a widow, falls in love with Antonio, the master of her household, but her elder brothers forbid her from marrying again, in order not to divide the inheritance. Secretly, she becomes betrothed to her lover and bears him children. Ferdinand, the duchess’s most depraved brother, threatens her, so she and Antonio mastermind a plot in an attempt to escape from the court.
