Cupboard of the Devil
A room that serves as a kitchen, living room and bedroom,
with bare walls and windows so dirty you can’t see through
them. There is an old stove, a bed, a worn table and chairs,
a malfunctioning dishwasher, a cupboard, and a collection of
empty milk and wine bottles on the otherwise bare shelves.
Here lives Miklós with his mother, Piroska. As Miklós tells his
stories, this space is transformed again and again, from a
forest to a court hall to the house of the devil.
The show is called The Cupboard of the Devil, and is a
comedy on gypsy tales. The production can be enjoyed by
all ages, for each story is complex and full, bursting with
laughter, sorrow, hope, honesty, jealousy, loneliness and
magic.
Jean Lambert-Wild has been the artistic director of Comédie
de Caen in Normandy since 2007, a theatre that makes
both national and international productions, working with a
variety of independent theatre companies form France and
many other European countries.
Lambert-Wild believes that theatre is an interdisciplinary
art – a forum in which every branch of knowledge has
an opportunity for self-expression. He also used to make
a living as a magician, which is evident in his magic-
filled productions, and he undoubtedly possesses a great
sensibility for children’s theatre and children’s literature.
