Ion Luca Caragiale

A Stormy Night a comedy in one act

This playful story by the father of Romanian drama is about social climbers. Everyone wants to appear one rung of the ladder higher than they are. But as they stretch, one sees the holes in their socks. It is a vigorous satire. We find ourselves in the midst of family confusion. The father trusts his household confidante, who without hesitating makes a cuckold of him.

We discern in the background the outlines of a hastily constructed social order (Caragiale examines the birth of the Romanian bourgeoisie in the 19th century). But we recognize not only the distinctive world of the Balkans, ruled by corruption and cronyism, but also the distinctive relationships of Eastern European society. The sketch of the era is but a background, however. In the foreground, the ceaseless carnival of human vanities rages on.
