One of Agota Kristof's earlier works, The Rat that Passes depicts Bredumo, a lawyer who is forced to relive events from his past when his room is transformed into a prison cell and his servant becomes his guard. Probably born out of her own life experience, this tragic comedy raises the question of our individual responsibility in a world where the absurd is a mirror of reality. Agota Kristof was born in Hungary but, at 21, was forced to leave when the Soviet military suppressed the Hungarian revolution. She fled to Switzerland in 1956, and 5 years later, after leaving her job and husband, began writing novels in French.
