A Night’s Lodging
Beyond hope or ambition, devastated and neglected, people dwell in an underground “night lodging”. They are the well-known figures of world literature: Klesch, Satin, the Actor, Vasca Pepel, the Baron, Luka and the others… The night’s lodging – a homeless shelter as we would call it today – is the diagnostic symbol of humanity that has come to a dead end. It is a portrait of mankind that has lost its faith in God and in the transcendental realms of existence, but at the same time is unable to recognise its own mission, thus being left with nothing more than self-destruction. It is this hopeless, paralysing atmosphere which the newcomer Luka is placed into; to stand for a different truth.
