Réka Szabó

Réka Szabó is a Hungarian dramaturge from Transylvania and a university lecturer. She studied theatre dramaturgy between 2008 and 2010 at the Hungarian Faculty of Theatre and Film at the Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, and in 2013 she obtained a second degree in Hungarian and German studies from the Faculty of Literature. She studied on scholarships in several German cities (Stuttgart, Munich, Weimar, Gießen). After completing her master’s degree in German studies, she earned a PhD at the Faculty of Theatre and Film, Cluj, where she worked as a part-time lecturer between 2017 and 2024.
She began her dramaturgical career at M Studio Movement Theatre in Sfântu Gheorghe, and from 2017 worked under the artistic direction of Attila Keresztes as dramaturge and artistic assistant at the Tompa Miklós Company of the National Theatre of Târgu-Mureș, Romania. Since 2022, she is teaching and leading a dramaturgy class at the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest. From 2023, she works as dramaturge at the National Theatre of Budapest, and as coordinator for international relations at the MITEM International Theatre Festival, Hungary. Since 2017, she is the permanent dramaturge collaborator of theatre director Attila Keresztes.
In recent years, she has also worked with such prominent theatre directors as Horațiu Mihaiu, Radu Afrim, Géza Bodolay, Boris Bakal, Theodoros Terzopoulos, Jan Fabre, and Alexandar Popovski.
Her theoretical research is closely intertwined with her dramaturgical work, placing her professional activity at the intersection of academic research and artistic work. In addition, she actively participates in coordinating both domestic and international projects and in the creative development of documentary theatre productions.
