Krisztián Gergye
Krisztián Gergye is one of the most impressive artists of contemporary dance scene. Director, choreographer and dancer.
He started his stage career as a Javanese dancer. Mixing tradition with a modern attitude he then created his own vocabulary for dance and body. He has been staging his own choreographies since 2001. He began with independent projects to go on with permanent collaborators and finally his own company.
His experiments lead him to the border territories between dance, straight plays and fine arts, an ambition his company’s motto, “not just dance” reflects well.
As a dancer and choreographer, he has been a guest to nearly all famous Hungarian dance groups and performed in all contemporary dance theatres and venues. He has been awarded several prizes both for his creative work and as a performer. As a choreographer, he was twice nominated the Rudolf Lábán Prize, in 2008 he became The Year’s Best Choreographer, while in 2009 he was awarded with the most important prize in Hungarian dance scene (Harangozó Gyula Award) and in 2010 won Zoltán Imre Award.
Company Krisztián Gergye has performed in several European countries: Poland, Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Portugal, London, Düsseldorf; in this year: Kosice (Slovakia), Maribor (Slovenia), Dortmund (Germany) and Subotica (Serbia).
Gergye has a quite specific conception of performing art in Hungary, amalgamating body performance and traditional Far East performing traditions with specific spaces, like museums or community rooms. Exploring opportunities to transcend artistic genres, he has directed dance concerts, contemporary dance opera, worked in opera performances and concerts as a choreographer, and he regularly plays and directs in theatres.
His performances explore and push the boundaries of artistic genres, and are characterized by the fascinating interplay of music, physical presence and visuality.
With his own company – in line with their motto ‘Not Just Dance’ – he is engaged in continuous explorations along theatrical border-lines, and over the past few years this collective has earned growing recognition both in Hungary’s and the international dance scene.
