10th Theatre Olympics I The Journey of the Mask

Come with us from Epidaurus to Budapest!

On 27 March, on the occasion of World Theatre Day, the Greek director giant, who founded the Olympics, Theodoros Terzopoulos, gifted the National Theatre with a traditional theatrical tragedy mask. The ceremony took place in the ancient Greek amphitheater of Epidaurus.

The mask was accepted by two representatives of the young generation of actors, Ilka Sipos and Péter Juhász, who worked with the master in Budapest in the production of The Bacchae. The two young people are third-year students of the Rippl-Rónai Institue of Arts and Theater at Szent István University in the class of Attila Vidnyánszky, János Zalán, and Zsuzsa Varga. The Greek artist concluded his speech with the following: "My heartfelt congratulations to the Hungarian National Theatre and the organisers of this dynamic, versatile, and universal programme, which awakens the truths that only great theatrical art can offer." Following the handover, the mask "set off" on a European tour to visit a few of the artists participating in the Theatre Olympics. Someone will be met in their own venues, but most will be visited by the mask and the film crew on tour: clown Slava Polunin on his Italian tour, director Tiziana Barbiero in her theatre in Bergamo, and Romeo Castellucci and Heiner Goebbels will also appear in the film about the trip. The traditional theatrical mask will arrive in Hungary for the opening event on 15 April, where it will also cross the Danube as part of a breathtaking production.

The next stop on the 10th Theatre Olympics roadshow is Bergamo and the Teatro Tascabile Di Bergamo. In the Italian city, we caught up with Tiziana Barbiero, who is coming to Hungary with her company for two performances. In the framework of an Italian-Indian co-production, a special production of Stories from Mahabharata will be presented at MITEM, while the Karinthy Theatre will host a production titled The Yoricks, directed by Tiziana Barbiero.
He has a penchant for the absurd, works with people with a tendency to be happy, and has many more ideas he would like to bring to life. The Mask and the crew met the father of 30-year-old SNOWSHOW, Slava Polunin and his company at the Teatro Rossetti in Trieste during their Italian tour. The world-famous performance of the clown will be performed five times at the National Theatre.
The next stop on the Theatre Olympics road trip was Salzburg, where we visited Romeo Castellucci during the Salzburg Easter Festival. The Italian director is bringing an unconventional play, BROS, to MITEM 2023: https://mitem.hu/en/programme/performances/bros
The world-famous German director Heiner Goebbels was visited at his home in Berlin by the Mask and crew of the 10th Theatre Olympics. The artist comes to the 9th MITEM with his production of Everything That Happened and Would Happen. The piece spans a hundred years of European history: its giddy contradictions, false promises, and consuming crises. he performance will be performed on 8 and 9 June at 7pm in Tüskecsarnok, Budapest
The last stop on the Journey of the Mask was the wonderful city of Paris, where we visited the director of Le Théâtre du Châtelet, French artist Olivier Py. We interviewed the director, who is coming to the 10th Theatre Olympics with his special production of Hamlet, about the play and the festival in his home theatre.
